i was wondering why the character said poor devil if the people were dying for know reason.i guess they are getting called devil because they are going to the furnace to get burned and the devil is genarally found in hell witch is fire.so i guess that is why they are being called "poor devils"

the fact that he took time between each hit tells me he was trying to make the pain last longer by thinking it was over and continueing to whip whip him regaining his strenth threw every stroke

The reason he says this is because he feels empty ,he feels like no one can help him threw what he is going threw. He feels like God is not helping him and is just ruining everything but yet God will eventually help in the end
