MIGRATION

  • Def: seasonal movement of animals from one region to another
  • Sentence: The birds' migration takes place in November.

PUSH FACTORS

  • Def: factors that push people away from a certain location
  • Sentence: One push factor is religious persecution.

PULL FACTORS

  • Def: Factors that pull people towards a certain location.
  • Sentence: One example of a pull factor is good education.

SOCIAL FACTORS

  • Def: facts and experiences that influence or control an
  • individual or group's personality, attitudes and lifestyle.
  • Sentence: Social factors widely vary based on where you are located.

ETHNIC PERSECUTION

  • Def: Ethnic Persecution is the hostility, unfair treatment, abuse or violence against
  • a group or individual based on their perceived ethnicity
  • Sentence: Ethnic persecution is usually considered a push factor.

RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION

  • Def: systematic mistreatment of an individual or group of
  • Individuals as a response to their religious beliefs (usually violence)
  • Sentence: Religious persecution took place during the Holohcaust.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • Def: any factor, abiotic or biotic, that influences living organisms
  • Sentence: Well known environmental factors include beaches, amount of
  • trees, and number of animals in a certain location.

PHYSICAL BARRIERS

  • Def: factor that limits the migration, interbreeding or free movement of individuals or animals
  • Sentence: Physical barriers can be very hard to get past when someone is Immigrating.

IRISH POTATO FAMINE

  • Def: a famine in Ireland resulting from a potato blight; between 1846 and
  • 1851 that caused much death and many to immigrate to America
  • Sentence: The Irish Potato Famine decreased the Irish population by 20-25
  • percent.

  • Def: the state of being extremely poor.
  • Sentence: There are very high rates of poverty in many countries.

ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE

  • Def: the enslavement and transportation, primarily of African people, to
  • the colonies of the New World that occurred in or around the Atlantic Ocean
  • Sentence: The Atlantic Slave Trade was considered a push factor because it pushed
  • many Africans out of their homes.
