SECTION 1

  • Sacred tradition and sacred scripture
  • Scripture: Speech of God put down in writing
  • Tradition: The Word of God which has been entrusted to the Apostles by Christ and the Holy Spirit
  • Old Testament: Written Word of God through His prophets and messengers
  • New Testament: Christian revelation

SECTION 1 CONTINUED

  • The Pope, bishops, priests, and even laity compromises the living voices of the church.
  • Public revelation began with Adam and Eve and ended with the death of the last apostle, Saint John.
  • Revelation means to "draw back the veil" or uncover
  • Pre Christian revelation was before Jesus' time
  • Revelation is when God fully shows himself by being among us
  • Our lord went to preach and teach about the teaching and traditiona of the Catholic faith.

SECTION 2

  • Apostolic fathers: disciples directly taught by the apostles
  • Many interpretations of the Bible are created
  • Church is custodian of the scripture and tradition
  • A creed is a statement of belief
  • Councils have been called in response to many controversies

SECTION 3

  • The fathers of the Church are saintly writers who are recognized as witnesses of the faith
  • The Doctors of the Church are saintly theologians who have guided the faithful and have been recognized officially by the Pope
  • The writings and decrees of the Popes are another expression of the teachings of Christ. These are called encyclicals.
  • The thoughts, writings, prayers, and actions of the saints and faithful, are part of the sensus fidelium

SECTION 4

  • Doctrine development: Development over time of the meaning of the things that Jesus revealed to us.
  • 3 places we find development of doctrine: Writings of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, the councils of the Church, and the experience of the faithful.
  • Doctrine doesn't contradict itself as it comes through the Holy Spirit who guides the Church and its teachings.
