THE NEW ENGLAND SCHOOL TEACHER

  • Harriet Bishop stepped off Mississippi River Argo and onto the landing at a settlement called St. Paul.

TURNING POINT

  • White settlers came to Minnesota in hopes of owning their own land and being their own boss, white settlers came to Minnesota because they hoped to buy from the government.

A COMMUNITY GROWS

  • Hans Mattson began writing a series of letters that were published in Hemlandet, a Swedish language newspaper published in Chicago. The letters described life in Minnesota and urged other swedes to come. Many just did that.

A COMMUNITY GROWS

  • Norwegians had left Norway because land and jobs were scarce there. Families from Southern Ireland had come to escape the terrible famines in their homeland. Germans, many of whom were fleeing wars back home.

STRONG FEELING

  • Harriet Bishop established St. Paul's first Sunday school. Organized a temperance group, led several women's organizations that raised money for community projects.

MINNESOTA TERRITORY

  • Legal territory, with a governor, legislature, and courts of its own.

THE SWEDISH IMAGRANT

  • Hans Mattson brother in law Willard chopped down some trees, so they could build a house in the spring. The weather was mild when they started, but overnight the temperature dropped.
