ABOLITIONIST

Reformers who wanted to abolish or end slavery.

WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON

A quaker who strongly opposed the use of violence to end slavery.

FREDERICK DOUGLAS

A slave who escaped to freedom. He was a strong speaker and abolitionist.

HARRIET TUBMAN

A woman who escaped slavery and helped others escape using the underground railroad.

SOJOURNER TRUTH

An illiterate slave who became a powerful voice for slaves and women.

LUCRETIA MOTT

A quaker who spent years working in the anti slave movement. She hade unique skills.

ELIZABETH CADY STANTON

An abolitionist who was denied rights in a meeting because of her gender.

WOMENS SUFFRAGE

The right for women to vote.

An organized effort to improve the status of women in society.

SUSAN B. ANTHONY

An ally of Stanton. She and stanton created the National Woman's Suffrage Association.

A movement which explored the relationship between humans and nature through emotions.

A leading transcendentalist. Asked America to question the value of material goods.

INDIVIDUALISM

The unique importance of each individual.

A man who accepted Emerson's challenge. He spent 2 Years living in the woods.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

An idea that people should peacefully disobey unjust laws if their consciences demand it.

HERMAN MELVILLE

A novelist who began to change the tone of american literature.

NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE

A novelist who changed the tone of american literature. He wrote stories with dark tones.

LOUISA MAY ALCOTT

The author of "little women", she presented a gentler side of New England life.
