UPPER CLASS

  • Makes up just 1 percent of popuation
  • Two groups : "old money" and "new money"

  • Primarily high income business people
  • Most have college educations and higher level degrees

LOWER MIDDLE CLASS

  • Hold white collar jobs-work that does not involve manual labor
  • Most require less education and provide lower income

THE WORKING CLASS

  • Hold jobs that require manual labor
  • Factory workers, tradespeople, less skilled workers
  • Have been labeled blue collar jobs

WORKING POOR

  • Work at the lowest paying jobs
  • Often temporary or seasonal
  • Housecleaning. Migrant farmwork, day laboring

UNDERCLASS

  • Families that have experience unemployment and poverty over several years
  • Some work but mostly undesirable low paying jobs
  • Day to day struggle for survival
