Night by Elie Wiesel

CHAPTER 1: ANIMALS
"We walked toward the station, where a convoy of cattle cars was waiting."
Wiesel, 22
Pages: 3-22

In this chapter, Elie and the other Jews had there rights, homes, and lives taken away; they were treated like animals. The picture represents the harmless, confused Jewish (the mouse), imprisoned (the cage) in the ghettos and looking out on the world wondering why the are not treated like humans. The quote shows a specific time when the Jewish were treated like animals: a time when they were transported the same way cattle are.

CHAPTER 2: FIRE
"In front of us, those flames. In the air, the smell of burning flesh."
(Wiesel, 28)
Pages: 23-28

In this chapter the Jewish ride the cattle car for days, the entire time there is a mad women speaking of a fire that isn't there. This picture shows how on one side, the fire can't be seen, but its still there. And once you see the fire, it is overpowering. This represents how there is danger that can't be seen by the Jewish, but once the arrive and see it, it is completely paralyzing. The quote shows the first instance when everyone realized that the fire, and the danger was real.

CHAPTER 3: SELECTION
"The baton was moving constantly, sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left."
(Wiesel, 31)
Pages: 29-46

In this chapter, the Angel of Death (Doctor Mengele), decides during Selection whether each Jewish inmate is sent to the left, for work, or to the right, for death. This picture represents the two paths that the Jewish people could be sent down. In both the photo and the book the person being sent to the left or right has no possible idea of whats ahead.

CHAPTER 4: INHUMANE
"That night the soup tasted of corpses."
(Wiesel, 65)
Pages: 47-65

So many atrocities took place during this chapter, not that the entire book was cruel and awful, but this chapter really demonstrated the inhumanity that took place. During all the injustice going on in Elie's camp, whether it was the blackmail for his gold took, or the senseless beatings, Elie an the other's kept wondering where God was. Therefore the picture shows their confusion with the phrase on it and the question mark and Jewish stars made up of the barbwire that encompassed the camps.

CHAPTER 5: STAY?
"All they could utter was one word: 'Evacuation'."
(Wiesel, 81)
Pages: 66-84

In this chapter there were so many moving parts; it was decided that God was no longer there, there was another selection, and there was an evacuation. Elie
had an opportunity to be left behind because he was injured, but he decided not to stay, but to march with his father. The picture shows that leaving seems like the better choice because there is light out the exit, but actually it would be better to stay in the darkness of the picture. The dark represents the confusion that Elie had when he thought about staying.
