Optimism

Chapter 1- p. 3-22
"Optimism soon revived" (Wiesel, 9)
Many people were optimists even when they had heard bad news. I chose this picture because optimism is having a happy disposition. The quote talks about optimism.

Loss of Sanity

Chapter 2- p. 23-28
"Ms. Schachter had lost her mind." (Wiesel, 24)
A woman named Ms. Schachter had gone crazy. The whole chapter was set in a cattle car. Losing your mind is the same as losing your sanity.

Chapter 3- P. 29-46
"Yet that was the moment when I left my mother" (Wiesel, 29)
Why I chose the name: In the beginning of this chapter, Elie is separated from his family.
Why I chose the picture: The picture shows a family, Elie is separated from his family.
Why I chose the quote: This was the moment of separation.

Punishment

Chapter 4- p. 47-65
"And he began beating him with an iron bar." (Wiesel 54)
Why I chose the name: Throughout the chapter, Elie and his father are punished.
Why I chose the picture: Whipping was the main method of punishment during the Holocaust.
Why I chose the quote: It was the first beating of the chapter.

Disenchantment

Chapter 5- P. 66-84
"Why, but why would I bless him?" (Wiesel 66)
Why I chose the name: Disenchantment is the loss of respect for something you previously respected which happened to Elie with god.
Why I chose the picture: The picture is religious, which is what Elie lost hope in.
Why I chose the quote: It showed his newfound disregard for god.

Exhaustion

Chapter 6- p. 85-97
"My foot was aching, I shivered with every step. Just a few more meters and it will be over. I'll fall." (Wiesel 86)
Why I chose the name: Elie and his father are exhausted for the whole chapter.
Why I chose the picture: The picture shows people running, which is what took place in the chapter, running.
Why I chose the quote: It portrayed the tiredness of his bones.

Chapter 7- p. 98-103
"The night was growing longer, neverending." (Wiesel 98)
Why I chose the name: The chapter begins with Elie saying that the night felt neverending.
Why I chose the picture: Elie talks about the night a lot this chapter, the moon is symbolism.
Why I chose the quote: It connects to the title, "Endless".

Guilt

Chapter 8- p. 104-112
"I felt ashamed, ashamed of myself forever." (Wiesel 106)
Why I chose the name: Elie feels guilt for thinking about how great life would be without an extra mouth to feed.
Why I chose the picture: Elie thinks about taking his father's bread rations.
Why I chose the quote: It shows the immense guilt that Elie experiences.

corpse

chapter 9- p. 113-115
"From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me." (Wiesel 115)
Why I chose the name: Elie looks in the mirror and sees a corpse.
Why I chose the picture: The skulls symbolize the end, not just of life, but suffering, Elie is freed this chapter.
Why I chose the quote: This was the final example of dehumanization.
