Character Analysis: Calpurnia

by Maddie Hulcy

Symbol

A symbol that represents Calpurnia is a bridge. A bridge is a strong, sturdy, and reliable structure that connects to land masses. Calpurnia is also a strong and reliable woman, demonstrating this ability to be reliable when she brings the children with her to church, and has to hold her ground when another black woman, Lula, criticizes her for bringing white children to a black church, saying, "They's my comp'ny"(Lee 222) and "It's the same God, ain't it?" (Lee 222). She is also the bridge for Jem and Scout to the black community by bringing them to church that day and representing a black presence in the household, again resembling her symbol of a bridge.
