Background- Stuck in an island with no adults, a dozen pre-adolescent boys are the only survivors in an apparent plane crash, only to find themselves the only inhabitants of the island. They are forced to hunt for food, create shelter and develop their own civilization to survive.
Ralph, one the oldest boys in the group, was elected leader by the boys. He is also one the characters who change a lot through out the book, like Cole. At the start, he is energetic and calm, and really confident. He seems to naturally know what needs to be done to get rescued and he knows what leadership is required, but tries to also have fun.
At the same time, Ralph is still vulnerable to temptation just as much as the other boys. He struggles with himself to be evil as well. He gives in to his desires sometimes, playing "a game" with and the hunters and participating in death dance that a rival group had. he also participates in the killing of one of the other boys, Piggy. He becomes more brooding, internally and externally, showing the change in people by only several turn of events.
By the end of the book the "fair haired" boy who had stood on his head in chapter one has been replaced by a boy with "a filthy body, matted hair and an unwiped nose," who wept for the death of Piggy, the end of Ralph's innocence and for the darkness in man's heart.
