Paul changed throughout this story. In the begging he is a scared kid afraid of his brother who caused him to lose his vision. Through out the story he changes by coming a crossed real life scenario such as mikes death and the tangerine groves. This causes him to grow and mature and to become more of an adult. This change was finalized when he stood up to Erik by writing the police report.
