Speech: The way somebody presents themselves through words.
- “Sit up! I haven’t got all day,” growled Rosa,”: Rosa is mad at Matt

Theme: The way the story is portrayed
- The Alacran Estate

Action: They way the story or a person moves
- when Matt went through the window.

Effects on Others: How the conflicts effect the characters
- Matt kisses Maria, Maria gets mad.

Looks: How the characters are shown throughout the story.
- Al Patron was portrayed as old, and wrinkly

INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION

  • When the author imposes actions to infer about a char.
  • Ex. Josh burned down the village
  • Example from the story: Tom tried to drown the dog.

DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION

  • Telling the reader something from the beginning with no clues
  • Ex: He is a bad kid.
  • Example from the story: Steven Benito is bad.

TYPES OF CHARACTERS

  • Flat Character: we do not know much about them (Benito)
  • Round character: we know most of their traits(Matt)
  • Static: they stay the same throughout the story (Maria)
  • Dynamic: the character changes (Matt)
