  • IN 1625 James I died. Charles 1, his son, took the throne
  • He always needed money because he was at war
  • with both France and Spain
  • He was forced to call parliament

CHARLES WAS FORCED TO SIGN A DOCUMENT CSLLED THE PETITION OF RIGHT

  • This petition agreed to four points:
  • He would not impose martial law in peacetime
  • He would not imprison subjects without due cause
  • He would not levy taxes without Parliaments consent
  • He would not house soldiers in private homes

CHARLES I

EVEN AFTER AGREEING TO THE PETITION, CHARLES IGNORED IT.
