  • Was born on December 31, 1738 in London, England.
  • Started his military/political career in the late 1750's & early 1760's.
  • Was a British General from 1775-1783.

EFFECTS & CONTRIBUTIONS TO WAR

  • Helped capture New York in 1776 & then pursued General George Washington across New Jersey.
  • Was second in command to Sir Henry Clinton.
  • Invaded North Carolina & won a costly victory in 1781 at Guilford Courthouse against the forces of General Nathanael Greene.
  • Against Clinton's wishes, he moved to Virginia.
  • A French fleet, & French & American troops surrounded him at Yorktown. He later surrendered there on October 19, 1781.

LIFE AFTER THE WAR

  • He returned to Great Britain. He was assigned to govern India which was British owned at the time. During his governing, he strengthened British rule.
  • In 1798, Cornwallis was told to to govern Ireland.
  • After 7 years, Cornwallis returned back to India.
  • He died a short while after he arrived in Ghazipur, India on October 5, 1805. He was 67 years old.
