  • The military school charles excelled at
  • 13th of his class in 1912

PRE-WW1

  • He joined the french army as an officer after his year of training
  • Talked to other officers about with the invention of machine guns
  • Calvary is useless
  • Instead they worked on developing trench warfare

WW1

  • De gaulle was given rank of platoon commander and was involved in
  • Heavy fighting with his men and was one if the 1st to be wounded
  • He came back to find most of his comrades dead by the old
  • Methods they used and was given command of a company

WW1

  • De gaulle's unit gained fame for repeatedly crawling into
  • No-mans-land listening in on enemy conversations
  • The info they brought back was so valuable charles recived
  • A citation for his bravery. He was promoted to captin
  • 1916 he recived a bayonet wound and fainted from tear gas

WW1

  • The germans captured him and called him Le Connétable
  • It means the constable because he knew german and would often read
  • The paper outloud. He wrote his 1st book here called
  • L'ennemi et le vrai ennemi (the enemy and the true enemy) published in 1924
  • Made 5 failed escape attempts and stayed at a high sec prison rest of the war

  • He lost his right of the newspaper :(
  • When the war ended he went back to his fathers house with his
  • 3 brothers they all survived the war

BETWEEN WARS

  • Served as an instructor for poland infantry against USSR
  • Won the highest poland military medal possible
  • Went back to france and said tanks and wuick maneuvers
  • Better than trench warfare
  • Now lieutenant colonel

  • June 5 france promoted him to
  • Under secretary of state for national defense and war

LEADER OF FREE FRENCH

  • Strongly denounced france's armisitce with germany
  • Set ab building the free frnch forces told everyone about the FFF
  • Over BBC radio
  • played all over france to rally the people
  • British didnt like him much and on 1943 de gaulles plane had a faulty tail

  • His skillful pliot saved him and noticed it was sabotaged
  • at 1st they thought german but there were no german spies in britain
  • Blames the allied power
  • Moved his headquarters from britain to Algeria
  • The FFF loved him and saw him as Frances leader

POST WAR POLITICAL LIFE

  • Prime minister 1944-1946
  • When it came to writing the new constitution for
  • The 4th republic gaulle wanted a strong president
  • But lost and instead it was like 7 months per term for presdient
  • It doesn't matter because the 4th republic sucked!!!

  • There he wrote his war memoirs

1958 CRYSIS

  • Plagued with political instability and
  • failures in Indochina and inability to resolve the Algerian question.gaulle said he was at the disposal of France
  • Politicians feared he would violate civil liberties he replied
  • "Have I ever done that? On hthe contrary, I have re-established them when they had disappeared.
  • Who honestly believes that, at age 67, I would start a career as a dictator?"

1958-1962 FOUNDING THE FIFTH REPUBLIC

  • Won 78% of the votes and voted into office 1959
  • Made the new franc worth 100 old franc
  • Made treaties with germany
  • Due to militate actions from Algeria hade 3 Assassination attempts
  • Made cease fire with Algeria

NUCLEAR POWER

  • on 13 February 1960 France became the world's fourth nuclear power
  • when a high-powered nuclear device exploded in the Sahara some 700 mile south-south-west
  • Of Algiers

NATO

  • Orginally joined but left when he felt UK and USA was to
  • Strong and felt america wouldnt defend france if USSR invaded
  • He tried to join the russian version but left that as well

RETIREMENT

  • In 28 April 1969 he retired from politics
  • He refused the huge pensions of president and general
  • He accepted a colonel pension though
  • While in office he kept jis personal and official spending separate
  • And paid for his own hair cuts and stuff like that
