APRIL 14, 1865

  • Lincoln is happy the Civil War is over.
  • Lincoln's son was finally home from the war.
  • Booth was getting mail and noticed flags for the presidents arrival.
  • Booth was now going to plan a assignation of Lincoln at Fords Theater.
  • Booth meets his accomplishes, and plans Lincoln's assignation.

APRIL 14, 1865

  • Powel attacked the Seward Family, while he was bed-written.
  • Atorzot was assigned to kill VP Johnson, he went to the hotel lobby and got drunk instead.
  • Booth shot Lincoln at the ford
  • Booth said " sic Semper tyrannes" on page 39
  • Booth broke his leg when he jumped to the stage from the presidents box.

APRIL 15, 1865

  • Booth meets up with Herold and they both go to Mudd's farm.
  • Lincoln died at 7:22 am in the Petersen boardinghouse.
  • "He is gone, he is dead." said one of the doctors.
  • Mudd found out about that Booth and Herold were the assassins, they left Mudd's then.
  • Mudd gave Booth and Herold directions to Samuel Cox.

APRIL 15, 1865

  • Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton took the place of the President instead of the VP for the manhunt.
  • Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton started the manhunt for Booth and his henchmen.
  • The reward money for catching them $50,000 for Booth, $25,000 for Herold, and $25,000 for John Surratt
  • Many false sightings of Booth and Herold made the manhunt hard.
  • Fords Theater investigated for the evidence.

APRIL 16, 1865

  • Stanton had no idea of where Booth's destination.
  • Booth and Herold arrive at Samuel Cox's house.
  • Samuel Cox got a confederate spy named Thomas Jones to help him.
  • Herold killed their horses and put them in a sand trap

APRIL 17, 1865

  • Major Smith went to Surratts boarding house, and arrested most of the residents.
  • Monday, April 17 was the most successful day of the in the three day manhunt for Lincoln's assassins.
  • Edman Spangler was arrested (the 39 year old stagehand from Fords Theater) His crime was holding the reins of Booths horse.
  • Michael O'Laughlen was arrested (the 28 year old, child hood friend of Booth) for participating in an old plan to kid-nape the president.
  • Many people in the theater at the time were rounded up and arrested, the (basically everyone was arrested in the theater) Fords were accused of helping Booth.

APRIL 17, 1865

  • General Lee surrendered the Confederate army, but the war was not over for Stanton.
  • Other armies had not surrendered yet in some southern states.
  • When Booth planned his escape he did not plan to be in the woods. He was waring a suit that looked as if he was attacked by a bear.
  • While soldiers questioned Marry Surratt, a man carrying a pic axe who was Lewis Powel the Man claimed to be digging a pipe.
  • She claims to not know him.

APRIL 18, 1865

  • Thomas Jones paid a visit to Samuel Cox's farm and gave Booth and Herold newspapers, food and supplies.
  • Mudd Is being questioned by Unoin soldiers. Mudd was not arrested, but the soldiers would soon come back to arrest him.
  • Booth found out that he was view as a monster and Lincoln was a hero.
  • Booth also learned that Powel sinisterly attacked the whole Seward house hold.
  • Booth's friend burned Booth's letter that he was suppose to deliver to the public.

APRIL 18, 1865

  • Booth wanted to explain why he killed Lincoln.
  • Surrat was accused of attacking Seward, he ran away to rome and joined the Pope's army.
  • Jones paid his third call on Booth and Herold.
  • Jones risked arrest every time he visited

APRIL 19, 1865

  • Lincoln's funeral would be on the nineteenth.
  • Thousands of people waited in line to view the open casket.
  • Everything building was lined with black crepe
  • One of the saddest days in the history of the country.
  • Lincoln was delivered in the carriage to the train to go to Springfield

APRIL 20, 1865

  • Booth went the wrong way on the row boat over the river
  • Ateserot was arrested
  • Aterot confessed to the Union soldiers
  • In marryland two teams were planing a raid where they would capture Atzerodt

APRIL 21, 1865

  • Booth and Herold went to a friend of Herold's house
  • A lost week it felt good to be on the move again page 115
  • Dr. Stuart failed to display souther hospitably, Booth later wrote a letter to him shaming him
  • Booth went to neighbor of Stuart Lucas who after violence agreed.

APRIL 22/23, 1865

  • Booth and Herold made it to Virginia and Booth shouted "I'm in safe in glorious old Virginia thank God"!
  • Ax confederate spy gave Booth and Herold horses
  • A action packed issue of the from the national police gazett
  • Then they were going to go to Dr. Stuart, but he refused to help him.
  • "I think Booth has crossed the river, and I want you to go right out." Said Lafayette, page 116.

APRIL 24, 1865

  • Booth and Herold arrived at Garret's farm and spent the night.
  • Dr Samuel a Mudd was arrested and taken to the old capitol prison
  • A telegraph ordered Lieutenant Edward to report Luther Byron Baker.
  • Edward p. Doherty, Luther baker, and Everton conger went to virginia

APRIL 25, 1865

  • Lafayette had the trust of the war Secarty
  • Lafayette took more credit and money than he deserved
  • "There goes the cavalry now" said garret page 120
  • Conger said "where are the two men who came with you across the river"
  • Jett betrayed Booth he said "I know who you want and I will tell where they can be found"

APRIL 26, 1865

  • Cavalry surrounded the Garret's tobacco barn
  • The door to the barn was locked booth was trapped
  • " I will suffer death first" page 122
  • "You beater give up" said Herold page 122
  • Herold surrendered himself and booth told him "damn you! You have betrayed me"

APIL 26, 1865

  • Luther Baker shouted "I want you to surrender, if you don't I will burn the bar down.
  • Booth got shot in the back which paralyzed him then he died
  • "Kill me kill me "page 129 said Booth
  • Corbet shot Booth he said God told him to
  • Mary Surratt, Lewis Powel, David Herold, and George Aterodt were all hanged for the part in Lincoln's assignation.

Epilogue

  • Thomas Jones kept secret about what happened in the thicket twenty years later he told a writer about it.
  • Samuel Mudd was released from prison by president Johnson.
  • Lafayette Baker wrote a book exaggerating his role in killing Lincoln's killer.
  • John Surratt was tracked down through Canada to Europe then to Egypt, and then brought back to USA and released.
  • Major Henry Rathbone went insane and killed his wife Clara Harris with the same type of weapons that Booth used
