History of cheerleading The first football game played with cheerleaders was played in 1869. Princeton university had an all male pep club by the 1980s. Thomas peebles took the cheers to university of Minnesota where football and fight songs were popular. Women weren't allowed to cheer until 1923.
It wasn't until the 40s that women started cheering in large groups. Sense so many college aged men were going off to fight in ww2. Lawrence "herkie" held the first ever cheer clinic at Sam Houston university and developed his signature jump, the herkie, the spirit stick, and Pom poms. All cheer staples today. In 1961 he developed the NCA (national cheer association)
In 1974 Jeff Webb (gen. manager of NCA) founded UCA which taught higher level skills. UCA has grown into varsity spirit corp. today. The original purpose for cheer is still relevant today even though there is still increasing popularity for competition.
How cheer has changed over time. Cheerleaders were known as just girls running around in little outfits, now their athletes, real athletes. Each year 75,000 participants took part in competitions. The national federation of state high school association said that competitive cheer is the fastest growing sport for girls. There was even talk about making cheer an Olympic sport.
when you are in cheer it ups your self esteem and makes you more confident in yourself. so i think cheer affects the world by being able to help teens be more posative and make them more confident and give them a way to vent or escape.
