POPULATION

  • There are only about 10,000 cheetahs left
  • Only about 100 in Asia, and small amounts scattered throughout Africa
  • Asiatic Cheetah-Acinonyx venaticus,
  • King cheetah

LIMITING FACTORS

COMPETITION

CHEETAHS ARE IN COMPETITION WITH LIONS FOR GAZELLES, BUT ALSO WITH HUMANS FOR GAZELS

Predation: since cheetAhs are slim and weak, larger animals like lions, hyenas, and leopards steal their kill, or even kill their Cubs.

DISEASE

  • There have not been any signs of a disease that have killed a large number of cheetahs, there have been some known to weaken the immune system which can lead to death.

WHY IS THE CHEETAH ENDANGERED

  • starving them out.
  • Human hunting

COSERVATION

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY RESERVES AND STRICT HUNTING LAWS. THEY HAVE ALSO BEEN CLOSELY MONITORING CHEETAH GROWTH BY TRACKING MANY OF THEM WITH RADIO COLLARS AND OTHER TRACKING EQUIPMENT.

LIFE HISTORY

SOCIAL GROUPS

  • Females usually stay alone, but male can sometimes be in groups of 2-3 male to protect land

GROWTH

  • 3-4 weeks infant
  • 4-5 months adolescent
  • Fully adult at 15 months
  • 3-5 cubs annually

HUNTING

  • They hunt by running and trying to bite the jugular
  • They bite and don't let go for anywhere between 15-25 min

KNOWN FOR SPEED

  • Can reach 70 mob is 6-10 sec
  • O-45 in 2 sec flat
  • Very strong tail (acts like a rudder)

  • More slender then most big cats
  • Non retractable claws
  • Tail stronger
