 An African Animal
For this project, I am doing a report on an african animal, the cheetah

By Harrison Ewing
The reason I chose to do this project on Cheetah's is because they are my favorite animal and are very fascinating.

basic facts

-The word Cheetah is derived from the Hindi word "Chita" meaning spotted one.

-Cheetahs are the fastest land animal on earth.

-They can be distinguished by their smaller size and spotted fur.

-While running they use their tail to help steer.

-Almost all Cheetahs live in Africa, but some live in southern Asia.

- They are found in savannas using the tall grass for camouflage while hunting.

-They are diurnal, hunting in the late morning and early evening.

-Unlike other large cats, Cheetahs can not roar, instead they purr and growl.

They are mostly solitary animals, yet some males live in small groups of brothers.

-Females will raise cubs alone without the help of a male for around a year.

habitat

Cheetahs are found all throughout Africa and southern Asia.

They also are an endangered species. This is because of land space, other predators, and poachers. The main reason of the Cheetahs being endangered is the space issue. There is not a lot of room for exercise and hunting. Although much of Africa is spacious, there are many farms and properties with fenced off boundaries which makes hunting harder. There also are many natural parks fenced off, which house many of the Cheetah's prey.

features

Cheetah's are known for their speed, which helps them with finding and capturing prey. They can run up to 70 miles per hour which is a little faster than a highway speed limit.

The stripes or "tear lines" going from their eyes to their mouths are used the to keep the glare from sunlight out of their eyes for better vision. This is similar to athletes using eye black.

diet

Whats on the menu?
The Cheetah's diet mainly consists of Gazelles, Wildebeest calves, and other small hooved animals.

Most of the Cheetah's prey are bigger than the cheetah itself.

They can go a few days without eating, but most go for one meal a day.

After a Cheetah catches a prey, it only gets to eat a little because larger animals like lions will steal the food. This is because they are larger and stronger and can intimidate the cheetah. Also, Cheetah's might try to hide their food so this does not happen.

Success Rate of Hunts

Cheetahs have a relatively efficient success rate of 50% and the hunts last about 20 to 60 seconds.
