BREANNA DINGELS

HOUR 3

ATOMIC THEORY

TIMELINE OF HOW THEORIES HAVE EVOLVED

DEMOCRITUS

460-370 BC

ATOMOS MODEL

  • All matter is composed of tiny, individual particles
  • Atoms cannot be divided
  • Atomos➡️ indivisible

ARISTOTLE

384-322 BC

EARTH, WIND, FIRE, WATER

  • Everything is made up of these 4 elements➡️NOT atoms
  • Against Democritus
  • Misleading theory

DALTON

1803

BILLIARD BALL MODEL

  • Atoms make up all matter
  • Cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed
  • Can be rearranged
  • Atoms can combine and form componds in chemical reactions

THOMSON

1897

PLUM PUDDING MODEL

  • Suggested that atoms # of electrons relates to atomic #
  • Balances by positively being charged
  • PPM is a sphere of +&- charged filling containing electrons

RUTHERFORD

1898

POSIVITELY CHARGED NUCLEUS

  • Gold foil: aimed beam of alpha particles at gold foil
  • Observed where the particles landed
  • If PPM was correct➡️particles would go through🚫didnt
  • Particles would sometimes bounce back
  • Concluding, a positvely charged nucleus with protons and electrons surronding

MILLIKAN

1909

MASS/CHARGE OF ELECTRONS

  • Oil drop: charged droplets of oil suspended btwn. 2 metal electrodes
  • Could determine chsrge of oil drops in mechanical equilibrium
  • Charge of single electron

CHADWICK

1932

PROTON NEUTRON MODEL

  • # of protons=# of neutrons
  • Protons AND neutrons in nucleus
  • Electrons surrond the nucleus
