CHEMICAL WEATHERING CHANGES

BY: KLAERS,ANDREW&ARTEAGA,FREDDIE

CHEMICAL WEATHERING CHANGES

  • A chemical reaction causes chemical change.
  • Oxygen in the air and water reacts with metal to form rust
  • CHEMICAL WEATHERING is the breakdown of rocks
  • When the rocks chemically change it can make them look Different

DISSOLVING

  • Water is the main cause of chemical weathering
  • Some minerals dissolve in regular water
  • After water falls down to earth it goes through soil and picks up carbon dioxide

RUSTING

  • The oxygen in the air also involved in chemical weathering
  • When these minerals dissolve in water oxygen in the air combines with iron to produce iron oxides or rust
  • Iron oxides form a coating that colors the water and rocks coating on iron oxides

WEATHERING OCCORS AT DIFFERENT RATES

  • Most weathering processes occur over hundreds of thousands of years.
  • (These are some. Factors for weathering.Hudreds of thousands of years it Only wears
  • Them down about the thickness of a fingernail.)

WEATHERING OCCURS AT DIFFERENT RATES

  • (Surface area-the more of rocks surface that is exposed
  • to the air and water the faster the rock will break down faster)
  • Rock composition -Different rocks break down at Different rates.
  • (Climate-water is needed for chemical weathering to happen
  • and heats it up.However when it is freezing it is harder to break.)

DISSOLVING

  • Air pollution can make water more acidic than natural
  • These gases react with water vapor in the atmosphere to create acid rain
  • Acid rain causes rocks to weather faster and break apart into smaller pieces
