WORDS, EXAMPLES, AND PICTURES

BY TORI SIMMONS

Acid: A compound that usually has a sour taste and is capable of neutralizing alkalis and reddening blue litmus paper
Ex: Boric Acid

Bases: Substances that are slippery to touch, tastes bitter, and changes the color of indicatorsi
Ex: Ammonia

Colligative: properties of solutions that depend on the number of particles in a volume of solvent and not on the mass of the particles
Ex: Vapor Pressure Depression

Colloid: A solution that has particles ranging between 1-1000 nanometers in diameter, yet are still able to remain evenly distributed throughout the solution

Ex: Shampoo, conditioner, and gels

Concentration: The amount of a substance per defined space

Ex: Molarity

Dilution: A reduction in the pH of a chemical (gas, vapor, solution)

Ex: C1+V1=C2+V2

Immiscible : Cannot be mixed together; must be shaken to eventually separate into layers

Ex: Oil and Water

Miscible: Mixture that have a uniform nature; mix well together

Ex: Alcohol and Water

Molality: The number of solute divided by the number of solvent

Ex: Moles of solute divided by kg of solvent

Molarity: The concentration of a solution given in gram moles of solute per liter of solution

Ex: Sugar Cube dissolved in teacup filled with water

Osmosis: The process of which solvent molecules pass through a semipermeable membrane from a dilute solution into a more concentrated solution

Ex: Insert hollow tube into a beaker of water

Precipitation: the creation of a solid in a solution or inside another solid during a chemical reaction or by diffusion in a solid

Ex: Insoluble ionic solid products of a reactant

Saturated: soaked or imbued thoroughly; charged thoroughly or completely

Ex: Adams are linked single bonds

Soluble: the maximum quantity of a substance that might be dissolved in another
Ex: All ammonium salts

Solute: the substance to be dissolved (one is called solute and one is called solvent in a solution)o

Ex: Kool-Aid crystals when making Kool-Aid

Solution: Homogenous mixture composed of only one phase

Ex: when the particles of Kook-aid crystals diffuse throughout the water

Solvent: Liquid in which something is being dissolved

Ex: The solvent for seawater is water

Supersaturated: the state of a solution that contains more of a dissolved material than could be dissolved

Ex: water-sugar solution used for making rock candy

Suspension: heterogeneous containing solid particles
Ex: Sand in water

Unsaturated: having the power to dissolve still more than a substance
Ex: Salt in water
