- The tribal name is a corruption of Tsalagi or Tsaragi.
- The name by which they commonly called themselves, may be derived from the Choctaw
- To the numerous caves in their mountain country they were called "cave people"
- The original tribal name is Aniyunwiya
Archeological Evidence shows that the Cherokee originated in the North, but they were found in possession of the South.
At once, a powerful agitation was begun for the removal of the Indians. By the treaty of the New Echota.
December 29, 1835, the Cherokee sold their entire remaining territory and agreed to move from Georgia to Mississippi.

- The Cherokee had about 25,000 in the early 1600's.
- The Cherokee Aniyvwiai name means "Principle People"
- Men were in charge of hunting and women were in charge of farming, property, and family.
- Men make politicle decisions and women make social decisions.
Cherokee actually lived in cabins made of logs instead of the stereotypical tee pee. They were a strong tribe with several smaller sections, all lead by chiefs. The tribe was highly religious and spiritual.
Eventually around the 1800s, the Cherokee Indians began to adopt the culture that the white man brought to them. They began to dress more European, and even adopted many of their farming and building methods.
Today, the Cherokee Indians have a strong sense of pride in their heritage. The Cherokee rose is now the state flower of Georgia. Today, the largest population of Cherokee Indians live in the state of Oklahoma, where there are three federally recognized Cherokee communities with thousands of residents.
