The Cherokee was one of the largest tribes in the 1800's and was widely known to be the most civilized group.

The men in the tribe wore breech cloths and leggings while the women wore wrap-around skirts. The men shaved their head and the women kept their hair long unless if a family member died then they would cut it to mourn them.

Before the Indian removal act was put into place the Cherokees had quite a good relationship with the U.S. Government and was working on making their own constitution and everything!
They would elect their own politicians and would start writing their laws down instead of keeping the 'verbal laws' around.

When the Cherokee had heard of the Indian removal act the had asked the Supreme Court for help. The judges said that the Cherokees could stay but president Jackson had sent an army to remove them and put them in Oklahoma anyway. On the way there they lost hundreds even thousands of people and they weren't the only ones. Many tribes where being moved to Oklahoma because the U.S. Wanted to grow in size and the in,y thing in their way was the tribes people.

Today the Cherokee is one of the most known nations in the U.S most people in the southern areas of the U.S. Are most likely to have Indian blood in them. After the trail of tears the Cherokees were put in reserves and have pretty much staid there since.
