Food/Meat

  • In the beginning we did not raise livestock, but later when the English arrived we started raising livestock.
  • We were very powerful hunters.
  • We farmed lots of food.

Tools And Weapons

  • We used flint to make arrowheads and sometimes poisoned them with snake venom.
  • We also used blow guns because they were easy to make.
  • We made axe heads with branches and rocks.

Art

  • We made lots of baskets out of river cane.
  • The men of our tribe liked to make lots of masks and shakers.
  • We made pipes for smoking.
  • We made totem poles.

Housing

  • We lived in wattle and daub houses.
  • We made these houses by weaving river cane and putting dry mud on the outside to cover up holes.

Housing

  • We lived in settled villages, usually located by a river.
  • Our houses were made of rivercane and plaster, with thatched roofs.
  • These dwellings were about as strong and as warm as log cabins.
  • We also built 7 sided buildings for ceremonial purposes, and each village usually had a ball field and benches for spectators.

medicine and health

  • We believed in heeling stones.
  • Some medicine plants we used were ;Yarrow-to help clot the blood.
  • Sumac-in treating eye problems.
  • Blackberry-for curing diarrhea and soothing swollen tissues and joints.
  • Rosemary-improves memory, relieves muscle pain.

MEDICINE AND HEALTH

  • Black Gum Bark- to relieve chest pains.
  • Cattail-for recovering from illness.
  • Greenbriar-was used as a blood purifier or for relieving joint pain.
  • note: These did not always work

  • We lived in east Texas.
  • Before we lived in Texas we lived in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Virginia and West Virginia.
  • We lived right next to the Gulf.

  • We had special regard for the owl and cougar.
  • Cedar, pine, spruce, laurel were holy to us.

  • We had a democratic goverment.
  • We had two governments: a white one for peace and a red one for war.
  • We cherokee were allowed to participate in counsels.

  • We fought in the Civil War on both sides.
  • We fought in the French and Indian War.
  • We fought raids against Anglo settlers.

  • Some of our tribes had adopted european dress.
  • Our men wore cloth pants and shorts.
  • Our woman wore dresses and skirts.

traditions

  • We celebrated green corn festival.
  • We would give crazy names to our tribes like Wild Potato Clan.
  • Our little people are very special to us.
  • We did the buger dance

economics

  • We traded with other tribes.
  • We had no established currency.
  • Some of us lived on farms in the 1700s.
