CHICKENPOX

HISTORY

  • 1500s: Giovanni Fillipo was the first case
  • 1600s: Richard Morton believed it was a milder form of smallpox
  • 1700s: William Heberden proves it is different from smallpox

SYMPTOMS

  • Appear within 10-21 days after infection
  • Itchy rash
  • Fluid filled blisters

3 STAGES OF THE RASH

  • Pink or red bumps called Papules breakout
  • They turn into small fluid filled blisters called vesicles
  • Crusts and scabs form covering the blisters

TREATMENT

  • Antibiotics should help clear the rash within 5-10 days

PREVENTION

  • Stay away from infected people
  • Get the chickenpox vaccine

WHO IS MORE SUSCEPTIBLE

  • Young kids not vaccinated
  • Adults who’ve never had it
  • People with immune system problems

THE VACCINE

  • It is completely effective in 98% of cases
  • In other cases, it significantly decreases the effect of chickenpox

COMPLICATIONS

  • Severe cases include: inflammation of the brain, pneumonia, dehydration

RISKS

  • Chickenpox is very contagious
  • Chance that you can get shingles later on in life
