TYPES OF CHILD ABDUCTION

  • Family abduction
  • Stranger abduction
  • Acquaintance abduction

STATISTICS

  • Every 40 seconds in the U.S. a child becomes missing or abducted.
  • In 74% of cases, victims were dead within the first 3 hours of abduction.
  • 74% of child abductions are girls.

LOCATIONS

  • Florida is a national epicenter for missing and exploited children
  • 80% of stranger abductions occur within a quarter mile of the child's home
  • In Michigan during 2014 there were 115 stereotypical kidnappings.

PROFILE OF ABDUCTOR

  • 95% of child abductors are men, and tend to be unmarried.
  • Unsocial and awkward in social settings.
  • Kidnappers also tend to profile their likely target before making an abduction.

LAW ENFORCEMENT

  • Law enforcement does not have to wait 24 hours to report missing child.
  • Officers are also required to immediately report the missing child into the NCIC missing person profile.
  • Amber alerts are also used to reach out to the public on missing children.

AWARENESS

  • Awareness is the most helpful way in prevention of child abductions.
  • Keep kids informed on the basics such as don't talk to strangers, stay in groups, and not let strangers in the house.
