PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CHILD ABUSE

  • physical, emotional, or sexual mistreatment of a child.
  • A "child" generally means a person who is younger than 18
  • 1 in 10 children are abused

TYPES OF ABUSE

  • Emotional: shouting, intimidation, degrading
  • Physical: hitting, kicking, whipping
  • Sexual: forcing sexual acts, exposing to sexual content
  • Neglect: failing to provide for a childs needs

STATISTICS

  • More than 3 million reports a year
  • US loses anywhere from 4-7 children a day
  • Emotional abuse is most common
  • Physical abuse is second, sexual is third
  • 45% of abused children are younger than 5

WHO'S LIKELY?

  • Parents who abuse substances are 10x more likely to abuse children
  • Parents who were abused are more likely to abuse their children

POSSIBLE PENALTIES FOR ABUSE

  • Lifetime requirement to register as a sex offender
  • Termination of parental rights
  • Criminal record
  • 5 years to life in prison
