CHILD ABUSE
- physical, emotional, or sexual mistreatment of a child.
- A "child" generally means a person who is younger than 18
- 1 in 10 children are abused
TYPES OF ABUSE
- Emotional: shouting, intimidation, degrading
- Physical: hitting, kicking, whipping
- Sexual: forcing sexual acts, exposing to sexual content
- Neglect: failing to provide for a childs needs
STATISTICS
- More than 3 million reports a year
- US loses anywhere from 4-7 children a day
- Emotional abuse is most common
- Physical abuse is second, sexual is third
- 45% of abused children are younger than 5
WHO'S LIKELY?
- Parents who abuse substances are 10x more likely to abuse children
- Parents who were abused are more likely to abuse their children
POSSIBLE PENALTIES FOR ABUSE
- Lifetime requirement to register as a sex offender
- Termination of parental rights
- Criminal record
- 5 years to life in prison
