PRESENTATION OUTLINE
SHE HAS AUTISM
SHE USES A WHEELCHAIR
SHE HAS AN INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY
CHILD-FIRST LANGUAGE
- Recognizes the child as of first importance
- The disability doesn't define the child
- Supports our school belief that all children are unique and made in the image of God and worthy of respect
OCSI Child First Guidelines
- Use the child's name
- Focus on the child's strengths & don't allow the disability to define the child's identity
- Our words matter- both what we say and how we say it- so be kind, polite, respectful, and speak "child-first"
How does our mission- Equipping Students to Walk With God & Impact the World For Him- connect to CHILD-FIRST LANGUAGE?
Let's Say...
She has a learning disability
”あの子は学習障害を持っている”
Let's Say...
She receives ELL Support
”あの子はELLのサポートを受けている”
Why does it matter how we speak?
- It matters because we can hurt our friends' feelings even when we don't mean to
- It matters because we should show respect and manners to all people all the time
- It matters to us because it matters to God how we feel about His children
OCSI Student Outcomes
- Collaborate with others, respecting them as God's image bearers.
- Communicate truthfully and effectively.
