TYPES OF CHULD LABOR

  • Child labor had 2 types
  • 1. Parish apprentice children
  • 2. Free labour children

STATISTICS

  • Children as young as 5 worked in harsh conditions
  • Children sometimes worked up to 19 hours a day
  • Up to 54% of workers in textiles in Britain were children

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Orphans were often treated like slaves
  • Children beaten and abused by factory owners
  • One form of punishment was to weight children
  • One common injury was chopped limbs
  • Death became a common occurrence to children

WHY?

  • Children were useful because their size allowed the. To fit into smaller places
  • Seen to "prevent youthful idleness and vice"

PRICE

  • Children were sometime paid less than a penny for the work they did
  • In general, children were paid a fraction of the price adults were paid

FACORTY ACT OF 1833

  • Improved conditions for children
  • Government appointed officials to oversee
  • Made children under 9 not work
  • Children 14 to 18 could work 12 hours
  • Children 9 to 13 could work 8 hours
  • Children were to attend no less than 2 hours of school
