  • More than 85 million children are subjected to physical labor, exploitation and trafficking
  • Of 57 million children who are out of school worldwide, more than half live in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Australia annually imports $16m worth of tobacco produced by child labor. Children involved in tobacco cultivation are subjected to serious health risks, such as nicotine poisoning. Most cigarette smokers in Australia are unaware of the origins of the tobacco they consume.
  • According to the ILO, 215 million children worldwide were engaged in child labor as of 2010.
  • According to a study conducted by the ILO in 2004, the benefits of eradicating child labor would “outweigh costs by nearly six to one.”

Many parents in impoverished countries push their children to work out of necessity. They are not able to sustain their families on their own income, and feel they have no choice but to push their children into child labor. One of the best ways to combat child labor is to provide fair wages and safe working conditions for parents so that they can provide for their families without being forced to depend on their children. To fight against child labor is to fight against global poverty.

They are all in child slavery, as defined by the 1956 UN Supplementary Slavery Convention. In these cases, as well as being in a hazardous situation, there is an intention to exploit these children for someone else’s gain. This group of children includes

Of the children in child labour, some 115 million are engaged in “hazardous work,” otherwise known as the worst forms of child labour (ILO, 2010). This is work that irreversibly threatens children’s health and development, through, for example, exposure to dangerous machinery or toxic substances, and may even endanger their lives. The worst forms of child labour also include the 8.4 million children in slavery and slavery-like practices, who are also subject to exploitation by others, and are the priority for us all to address.
