POOR FAMILIES USE CHILD MARRIAGES

PROTECTING FAMILY HONOR

  • Honor is important to families of many cultures
  • When a girl marries as a virgin, honor is brought upon her family
Honor can come from many things. One of those things being a woman's sanctity. It is know that when a woman or girl gets married as a virgin, it brings honor to her family. Being married young usually ensures that they are pure, therefore no shame is brought upon her family.

GENDER DISCRIMINATION

  • The cultures where child marriages are a problem, they devalue women and girls
  • Discrimination is a problem for many women
Many societies are know for discriminating against women, some worse than others. The societies where child marriages are a problem, discrimination is much worse there. For example, ways that the society discriminates against women are violence, rape, starvation, deprivation of education and healthcare.

INADEQUATE LAW ENFORCEMENT

  • In some countries there are laws banning child marriages but no one to enforce them
Just because there are laws banning it, does not mean that it has stopped. The laws have been passed but not enforced. Because of the lack of wealth, some countries cannot afford to enforce their laws. Therefore, child marriages continue.

TRAFFICKING

  • Families that suffer poverty often go one step further, beyond just marriage
  • Selling their children into prostitution
Child marriages do help some families with their money issues but it does not solve all of it. Another alternative is prostitution. Families use their children to make an income. Not only do they marry them off but also sell them for pleasure.

EFFECTS OF CHILD MARRIAGES

  • Lack of education
  • Sexuality & violence
When children are married at a young age, usually they have had some sort of education. When they get married, that education, what little there is, stops. Child marriages ensure that women do not become educated nor join the workforce. This is all part of discrimination towards women. Along with that, these girls that are married usually experience rape and abuse from their "significant other".

PROBLEMS OF CHILD MARRIAGES

  • Lifetime of poverty
  • Lack of education
  • Young pregnancy
Almost 100% of the time, when children are married at a young age, they are bound into a lifetime of poverty. Not only do they no longer receive an education, they continue to live in a poverty struck household. Another problem with child marriages is young pregnancies. These can lead to serious complications, including death of both the baby and the mother.

PROBLEMS FOR SOCIETIES WITH CHILD MARRIAGES

  • Death from pregnancies
  • poverty
Societies that suffer from a high rate of child marriages also suffer from other things as well. One of them being poverty. The poor families sell their children into marriage. That marriage ends up creating another poor family and they end up doing the same thing their parents did with their children, it's a cycle. Another problem for society is the deaths from young pregnancies. Of all the child marriages that occur, it is estimated that 50,000 deaths occur due to young pregnancies.

Steps to end child marriages

  • Laws need to be made banning child marriages
  • Those laws need to be enforced
  • The children who are currently in marriages need to be helped in getting out
  • Fundraisers started to help with taking action
