HISTORY

  • The founder of the movement was a former Christian Missionary Alliance pastor, David Brandt Berg (1919–1994).
  • The members of the cult viewed Berg as their father and, eventually, grandfather
  • The roots of The Family can be traced back to the counter-culture movement of the late 1960's.
  • Out of this hippie movement came a loosely connected group of Evangelical Christian organization.
  • After Berg had a prophecy about an earthquake, they wandered for 8 months in the southwest.
The hippie movement was originally called the "Jesus People," but was changed to "The Children Of God" after Berg claimed he received word from God that A massive earthquake would force Part of California into the ocean. They left and roamed the southwest for eight months and decided to change their name to "the Children of God" with Berg as their leader. The hippies were drawn to simpler lifestyle.
