CONFUCIANISM

  • Created by Confucius in 551-479 B.C.
  • Everyone has a spot on the social pyramid
  • Ideas on preserving the culture of the Chinese
  • 4 orders of society & 5 relationships
  • Women had a lot of children until they had a boy

BEGINNING OF POVERTY

  • Confucian Ideas had fathers pass down farm to children
  • Farms got smaller and smaller
  • Eventually could not support a family
  • Families were left in dust with no source of food
  • Poverty line in China went up from this point on

END OF CONFUCIANISM

  • Faded ~1905
  • Government began to realize the problem they faced
  • No one took action until 1979,so population kept gropwing
  • The Govt. introduced the One Child Policy
  • At this point china had 20% or world's pop. on 7% of the land

ONE CHILD POLICY

  • Strict way to get families to have only one child
  • Couples signed document to ensure payment for one child
  • Affected mostly rural areas because of poverty
  • More wealthy families paid fine that other families could not
  • Most families hated this policy

AFFECTS OF POLICY

  • In 1950's-1960's births per woman (b/w) was 5.6
  • Early 21st century the b/w was 1.4
  • Median age rose from 19 to 35
  • Population over 60 doubled
  • China's pop. still continued to rise at a fast, natural rate

  • 2008 huge earthquake devastes china
  • Thousands of school children dead
  • One Child Policy relaxed
  • 2009 compromise
  • 2013 compromise, which still exists today
