  • Population:1.25 billion
  • 3rd Largest Country
  • Capital: Beijing
  • Area of 9.6 million square km
  • Coast line of 18,000 km

PHYSICAL FEATURES

  • China has many features including
  • - Plateaus, Plains, Foothills, Rivers, Deserts
  • & Mountains. Major features include:
  • Great Wall of China, Himalayas
  • Plateau of Tibet, Taklimakan & Gobi Desert

PLATEAU OF TIBET

  • The Tibetan Plateau is the largest plateau
  • Includes all of the Tibetan & Northern China region
  • It has the world s highest mountain - Mt Everest
  • Largest Canyon- Yarlung Zangbo River Great Canyon
  • It consists of high mountains, rivers & gorges

YANGTZE & YELLOW RIVER

  • The Yangtze River is the third longest river (4000m)
  • It has high banks, so homes are safe when it floods
  • Yellow River is about 3000 miles long
  • Civilization began along the river 5000 years ago
  • It is nicknamed " The Great Sorrow "

GOBI & TAKLIMAKAN DESERT

  • The Gobi Desert is one of the driest in the world
  • Oasis are rare to be found in the Gobi Desert
  • Taklimakan Desert is nicknamed " Sea of Death"
  • It offers poisonous snakes, sandstorms & freezing nights
  • In fact, it is the second largest desert in the world

GREAT WALL OF CHINA

  • It is a wall that covers much of the northern border of China
  • It was built to keep out invaders from the north ( Mongols )
  • It started from the Qin Dynasty, millions of people worked
  • It was built over the course of 1000 years
  • The Ming Dynasty continued building the wall and finished it

CLIMATE

  • North China: Cold & Dry in Winter, Warm in Summer
  • South China: Warm & Wet in Winter, Rainy & hot in Summer
  • East China: Cool Winter, Hot in Summer
  • West China: Extremely Cold in Winter, Very Dry & Cold in Summer
  • Central China: Warm all year

HISTORY

  • Chinese civilization began along the Yellow River
  • It was ruled by Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi ( Qin Dynasty ) 222 BC
  • Inventions of Ancient China has proved enormous contribution
  • Dynasties were established until the Opium War, China became weak
  • This led to Nationalist Party. In 1949 , they fled, where Communist took over

RURAL LIFE

  • China faces many challenges to reduce residual poverty
  • Main reasons are: Poor Infrastructure, Poor Education
  • - No access to Land, Water, Technical Assistance & Healthcare
  • - Little means of Transport, Disasters, Unemployment
  • 55% resides in rural areas, most people are engaged in farming
