Buddhism

Founder

  • Siddhartha Gautama
  • He left his city
  • Wandered through the land were he felt pain
  • As a result he developed compassion
  • Eliminating desire, which became the basis of Buddhism

Origins

  • Began in India and incorporated much of Hinduism in its practice

Beleifs/Principles

  • Desire is the course of suffering
  • Buddhism DOES teach the concept of reincarnation
  • The way to end suffering is to end desire

Diffusion/ spread

  • Spread to Southeast Asia and east Asia
  • Especially during the Muarya Empire

Confucianism

Founder

  • Kung fu-Tzu

Beliefs/Principles

  • The goals are order, harmony, peace, and happiness
  • The man is capable of achieving through education
  • This is seen through the five relationships
  • First, Parent-Child: kindness in father and obtained devotion in son
  • Second, Husband- Wife: Righteous behavior in husband and obedience in the wife

Beliefs continued

  • Third, Elder sibling- Younger sibling: gentility in elder and respect in younger
  • Fourthly, Elder friend - younger friend: respect your elders
  • Fifthly, Ruler-subject be loyal to your rulers

Diffusion

  • Spread by his followers
  • It became the foundation of Chinese education
  • These teachings spread to Korea

Taoism

Founder

  • Lao- Tse

Origins

  • Grew from ancient Chinese philosophies

Beliefs/ principles

  • Tao means the way
  • They want harmony in the universe
  • Associated with the yin yang
  • Which reflects on harmony and balance

Diffusion/spread

  • Spread to places surrounding china
  • Incorporated into the teachings and beliefs of other religions
  • Such as Buddhism
  • And Shintoism
