CHINESE FESTIVALS

CHINESE NEW YEAR

  • It marks the start of the new year, beginning on the second new moon
  • They visit family and friends, have special meals, there is gift giving, and fireworks
  • Dumplings, spring rolls, fish, and niangao are often eaten

LANTERN FESTIVAL

  • Celebrated on the 15th day of the of the first month in the lunar calendar
  • People light many lanterns, and solve riddles on them
  • Some people eat dumpling balls or "yuanxiao" to denote Union, harmony, and happiness

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

  • Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month on the lunar calendar
  • People have dragon boat races, and drink xionghuangjiu, or wine
  • Represents the peak of masculine energy

MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL

  • Harvest festival celebrated by the ethnic Chinese and Vietnamese
  • They eat moon cakes
  • Held on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese calendar
  • People gaze at the moon and wish each other well

LABA FESTIVAL

  • Pray for a good life and for their ancestors
  • Eat sweet dumpling dish
  • Falls on January 17 next year but their is no holiday for this festival
