  • Began in India
  • Siddhartha  Gautama is the founder
  •  developed compassion  for  all  and  sought  ways  to  eliminate  these  hardship

  • Buddhism  does  teach  the  concept  of  reincarnation
  • Buddhism  does  not  hold  to  a  belief  in  a  deity

  • Spread  to  Southeast  Asia  and  to  East  Asia
  • It  is  a  religion  that  actively seeks  to  convert  others
  • It  was  never  widely  accepted  in  India  where  much  of  Buddhist  teaching

  • Kung  Fu-Tzu  (Confucius)
  • It  is  a  religion  that  actively seeks  to  convert  others

PRINCIPLES/BELIEFS

  •  goals:  harmony,  peace  and happiness  on  earth
  • the  Five  Relationships
  • character  of individuals: society,  and  government

DIFFUSION

  • Spread  after  the  death  of  Confucius , they  obtained  positions  in government.  
  • Benevolence  in  rulers  and  loyalty  of  ministers  and  subjects
  • formed  the  basis  for  the  civil  service  exam  in  China
  • spread  to  Korea  and  Japan
  • became  the  foundation  of  Chinese  education

TAOISM

FOUNDER/ORIGINS

  • one  basic  teaching
  • spread  of  Confucianism  and  Buddhism
  • Lao-Tse  
  • demonstrates  the  way  humans  should  live
  • Grew  from  ancient  Chinese  philosophies

PRINCIPLES/BELIEFS

  • associated with  Taoism  the  Yin/Yang
  • the  Three  Jewels: compassion, moderation, and  humility

DIFFUSION

  • Taoism  spread  primarily  to  the  areas  immediately  surrounding  China
