I AM LAI CHUN-CHUEN, AND I IMMIGRATED

EARLY TO CALIFORNIA FROM CHINA.

"GAM SAAN" OR "GOLD MOUNTAIN" IS WHAT WE CALLED CALIFORNIA.

WE WERE POOR AND HUNGRY PEASANTS, LOOKING FOR JOBS.

SO TO US, "GAM SAAN" SOUNDED GREAT. 20,000 OF

US CHINESE MEN TRAVELED ACROSS THE PACIFIC TO GET THERE.

AT FIRST, I NOTICED THAT WE WERE TREATED LIKE

GUEST AND GREETED WITH FAVOR.

BUT EVENTUALLY, MINING BECAME MORE DIFFICULT. THE AMERICANS DID

NOT WANT TO SHARE THE GOLD, SO THEY STARTED ATTACKING US.

THE GOVERNMENT PASSED A LAW MAKING

FOREIGN MINERS PAY A MONTHLY MINING FEE.

MOST OF THE FOREIGNERS LEFT AFTER THIS,

BUT US CHINESE STAYED.

WE WERE PERSECUTED. WHITES CUT OFF OUR BRAIDS,

BURNED DOWN OUR SHACKS, AND BEAT US.

WE ENDED UP LEAVING THE MINING BUSINESS, OPENING UP

RESTAURANTS, LAUNDRIES, AND STORES IN THE CITIES.

WE ALSO CONTRIBUTED A LOT IN BUILDING

THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD.

WE MADE CALIFORNIA THE "FRUIT BOWL"

OF THE UNITED STATED WITH OUR RICH CULTURE
