what causes Chlamydia infections?

  • A bacteria that infects the mucous membranes
  • in your body, such as the urethra in males
  • and the Urethra and Cervix in females
  • Chlamydia is similar to gonorrhea in this ways 
  • The Bacteria of Chlamydia is called Chlamydia Trachomatis

Prevelance of chlamydia

  • Most frequently Reported disease in US
  • spreading to more people
  • Quick spread due to mild, or no symptoms
  • People Transmit without knowing

PREVALENCE in numbers

  • 15-19 is the  age group with most risk
  • In 2012:
  •  1,422,976 cases of chlamydia were reported to CDC  
  • An estimated 2.86 million infections occur annually.

  • WOMEN
  • Age group 15-19 
  • 1 in 15 sexually active femalesaged 14-19 years
  • Black people

Incubation Period

  • 2-3 weeks
  • can be asymptomatic 

diagnosis

  • Nucleic acid amplification tests
  • A nucleic acid test, often called a “NAT”
  • is a molecular technique used to detect  
  • a virus or bacterium

symptoms

  • it's a silent infection so it doesn't present 
  • many/strong symptoms
  • men can tell with discharge, and painful 
  • urination

what to look for?

  • pain when peeing?
  • weird discharge
  • pain and swelling on testicles
  • Rectal pain, Pain when having sex
  • bleeding 

treatment

  • Medication (oral antibiotics)
  • Need to be tested after 3 months
  • azithromycin (Zithromax) or doxycycline
  • clears in 1-2 weeks

potential complications

  • IN women it can spread to Uterus, and
  • fallopian tubes, causing PID
  • PID can lead to infertility, and constant Pelvic pain
  • Can lead to ectopic pregnancy (deadly)

Potential complications

  • Men rarely get health problems
  • can get pain and fever
  • Untreated Chlamydia can lead to easy
  • spread and gain of HIV

How to prevent getting chlamydia

  • No sexual intercourse
  • Commit to a long term relationship
  • Use latex condoms, and dental dams
