  • 4,700 cases reported in Kenya in the past month
  • 119 people died in Kenya, March 2014
  • 80% of cases can be fatal
  • There is an estimated 3-5 million cholera cases per year

  • About 80% of people don't show symptoms
  • Up to 80% of cases can be treated with oral rehydration salts
  • There are 100,000-120,000 deaths per year in Africa from cholera

  • Once an outbreak is detected it is important to focus on treatment
  • If left untreated cholera can kill within hours
  • Since 1971 cholera currency has risen and fallen in Kenya
  • Its a global threat to public health
  • Its a key indicator to lack of social development

  • Cholera is a disease caused by the Bacterium Vibrio
  • People with low immune systems are more likely to be infected
  • For 7-14 days the bacteria in the feces goes back into the environment
