HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS IN CHILE

  • Chile's version of Santa is called,"El Viejito Pascuero" or Old Man Christmas.
  • Chileans celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25 just like Americans do.
  • He comes drawn by reindeer in a sleigh and leaves gifts for good boys and girls.
  • Instead of going down a chimney he climbs through a window.
  • Instead of it being chilly like it is in the USA,it is rather warm.

TRADITIONS

  • Chileans sing Christmas carols on Christmas Day.
  • They exchange gifts on Christmas as well as on Christmas Eve
  • They read from the bible out loud.
  • Some go to midnight mass while others stay at home.
  • And celebrate with family and friends.

FOOD AND DRINKS

  • One of Chile's traditional drinks is Cola de mono.
  • Another one is Pan de Pascua a bread filled with candies and fruit.

DECORATIONS

  • Chileans decorate their houses with bright lights.
  • They also set up Christmas Tree's.
  • They decorate with balloons too.
  • They set up a nativity made of clay called "Pesebre".
