COLUMBUS' ARRIVAL

  • Columbus thought he had found india
  • He had been looking for a sea route to asia
  • He had 3 ships - NIna, pinta and santa maria
  • He claimed the land for spain
  • But there were already people living there...

THE NATIVE AMERICANS' REACTION

  • The americans were interested in columbus
  • They accepted and welcomed him
  • They started trade and were generous
  • Columbus said they did not carry arms
  • They were not violent and did not fight

THE TREATMENT OF NATIVE AMERICANS

  • Columbus wanted gold to bring back to spain
  • The arawaks wore gold earrings
  • They were told to find more, but they couldn't
  • They had to flee, and were hunted with dogs and killed
  • The indians were forced in to slavery

AFTER AMERICA

  • Columbus went back to spain
  • He brought indians, gold, fruit and animals
  • He was welcomed as a hero
  • He got a hefty reward for finding america
  • Even today columbus day is celebrated in america
