HISTORY

In 1451, Christopher Columbus was born in Italy. From the time he was very young, he loved to explore. As a teenager, he started traveling on the seas. He believed that the East Indies could be reached by sailing west through the Atlantic Ocean. He asked the Kings and Queens of Portugal, France, and England to pay for a trip to the Indies, but they all said no. Finally after ten years, the King and Queen of Spain supported Columbus with the promise of becoming wealthy. Columbus began his voyage westward in August of 1492.

The trip was long, the crew members were scared, and were afraid they would never see land. Columbus offered a reward to the first sailor who spotted land. On October 12, one man found the Bahama islands. Christopher Columbus landed on what he thought was a spice island, and what we call now Indonesia. Next he visited Cuba and Dominican Republic.

Columbus returned to Spain where he was a hero. People believed he found a new world rather than a shortcut to the Indies. He never found the riches he expected.

SPONSERING COUNTRY

Christopher Columbus appealed to the kings of Portugal, France and England to finance a westward trip to the Indies, but all denied his request. After ten years, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain agreed to finance Columbus in the hopes of great wealth.

PURPOSE OF COLUMBUS'S TRIP

Columbus went exploring to find new land, spices, gold and new people to rule. He promised the Queen and King of Spain that he would find all of those things. He also went exploring hopefully to find a new route to India to trade spices. The main goal was to find the best sea route from Spain to the eastern parts of Asia. On August 2, 1492 Columbus sets sail in search of the Indies.
