HISTORY OF RELIGION

  • Protestant Christianity was the main religion studied
  • across Victorian England, starting in the 19th century
  • The bible was taken as the literal truth by the
  • people, this was known as Victorianism.
  • In 1859, a theory of evolution was created, causing much controversy in the church

History of the church

In the church, the wealthy members sat in the pews, while the lower class stood or sat in the floor. The minister was to be untouched by the people. All members were supposed to be seen as equal in the eyes of God, but the lower class was continuously looked down upon by those that
were higher.

Service and worship

Service was to be held at least 1-2 times every Sunday. The members were to dress their finest and show high respect to The Lord. The service was very formal, having strict rules and traditions that had to be followed.

FUNDING IN THE CHURCH

ALL OF THE MONEY IS BROUGHT IN FROM THE TITHE OF THE WEALTHY PEOPLE OF THE CHURCH. ONCE THEY GIVE MONEY, THEY ARE GIVEN A PEW THAT IS THEIR OWN. MEANING THAT IF THEY WERE TO LEAVE THE CHURCH, THEY WOULD TAKE THEIR PEW WITH THEM SO THEY LOWER CLASS WOULD NOT SIT ON IT. THE PAY FOR THE MINISTER CAME FROM THE TITHE OF CONGREGATION AS WELL SO THE SALARY MAY NOT HAVE BEEN STEADY.

Music in the Church

During the 19th century, a new explosion of hymn writing took place. The Anglican Church worked with other churches to write over 400,000 New and translated hymns to be sung by non-conformist churches.
