CINCO DE MAYO

  • Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated on May 5th. It recognizes the victory of the Mexican army over the French army on May 5th 1862.

HOW LONG DID THE BATTLE OF PUEBLA LAST?

  • The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening. 500 French soldiers were lost and fewer than 100 Mexican soldiers were lost.

HOW IS IT CELEBRATED?

  • The celebrations take place in the town of Puebla, which is where the battle happened
  • There are large parades with people dressed up as Mexican and French soldiers
  • People usually wear green, white and red which are the colors of the Mexican Flag.

WHAT KIND OF FOODS DO THEY EAT?

  • Watermelon guacamole
  • Chile de Arbol salsa
  • Red sangria
  • Tortilla soup
  • Chicken enchiladas

Cinco de Mayo is also celebrated in the United States. One of the largest celebrations are in cities such as Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco and Phoenix.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT CINCO DE MAYO?

PEOPLE OFTEN MISTAKE CINCO DE MAYO FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY, BUT IT IS NOT.

Cinco de Mayo is not a federal holiday in Mexico, and is a minor holiday outside of Puebla.

81 million pounds of avocados are consumed on Cinco de Mayo each year.

The worlds largest Cinco de Mayo party is held in Los Angeles, California.

The traditional dance is called the “Baile Folklórico.”
