PRESENTATION OUTLINE
MAIN PURPOSE:
The group of organs and tissues that carry needed materials to cells and remove their waste products.
PARTS OF THE SYSTEM
- Heart: the muslce that acts as the pump of the system
- Veins: carry blood from all parts of the body back to the heart
- Capillaries: carry blood to and from almost all body cells and connect arteries and veins
- Arteries: carry blood away fron the heart to various parts of the body
PARTS OF THE SYSTEM CONT.
- Left atrium: where the blood goes after its been oxygenated by the lungs
- Right atruim: where the blood goes after its been through the body
- Left ventricle: where the blood gets pumped throughout the body
- Right ventricle: where the blood gets pumped to the lungs
BLOOD PRESSURE:
The force of blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels.
If it's too low, blood might bit be getting to your organs (causing heart attacks, strokes, and/or kidney failure). If it's too high, cholesterol and fats build up (causing heart attacks and/or strokes)
First, the oxygenated blood from the lungs enters the left atrium, then enters the left ventricle. From there the blood goes through the arteries to various places throughout the body. It continues until it reaches the capillaries.
The nutrients are transferred to the tissue and the now unoxygenated blood goes through the veins back to the heart. The blood enters into the right atrium, then into the right ventricle, where it gets pumped to the lungs to be oxygenated.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS:
Due to consumption of a lot of fatty foods, fatty plaques line the blood vessels and become hard, causing hardening of the arteries (causing strokes and/or heart or kidney problems)
LEUKEMIA:
A type of cancer in which abnormal white blood cells interfere with production of other blood cells
ANGINA PECTORIS:
When not enough blood gets to the heart (causing chest pains, shortness of breath, fatigue and/or nausea)
WAYS TO KEEP THE SYSTEM HEALTHY
- Exercise everyday (at least 30-60 minutes)
- Eat a healthy diet (balancing out the types of foods you eat)
INTERESTING FACTS
- The circulatory system of arteries, veins and capillaries is about 60,000 miles long
- The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps to squirt blood 30 feet
