-First built in 326 BC by Tarquinius Priscus
-Was originally used as a race track between the Palatine and Aventine Hills

-Each year the Ludi Romani (Roman Games) or Ludi Magni (The Great Games) are held in honor of Jupiter Optimus Maximus

-A variety of activities were divided into ludi circenses (circus) such as chariot races or gladiatorial fights and ludi scaeinici (scenic) which were theatrical performances.

-The last games were held in 549 by Totilla the Goth.
-After 549 the Circus Maximus was never used again.

-It was taken apart hundreds of years ago salvaging the marble.
-The rest was destroyed by a fire and only a grassy hollow and a few ruins of bleachers are left of the Circus Maximus.
