The Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination on the basic of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin
The house judiciary committee held a series of hearings on the proposed legislation during the summer of 1963.
In February 1964, senate majority leader Mike Mansfield filed procedural motion to prevent the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and successfully prevented it.
The Civil Rights Act was ultimately passed on June 19 , 1964 by a vote of 73 to 27.
It paved the way of future anti-discrimination legislation, including the voting Right Acts of 1965.
