AFRICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS

HISTORY:

  • was one of the most significant and successful social movements in the modern world
  • influenced the modern women's rights movement and the student movement of the 1960s
  • largest social movement of the 20th century in the United States.
  • addressed primarily three areas of discrimination: education, social segregation, and voting rights.
  • Influential Person: Rosa Parks- started montgomery bus boycott(1955) for refusing to give her seat to a white person.

ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES

  • Ethnic minorites rights should not be denied despite color of skin
  • Encourage poor black immigrants to come to America/Britian
  • Reduces rioting and rebellion in society
  • Disadvantages:
  • Could not enter white restaurants, white schools, marry a white person and had to sit in back of bus

WOMEN RIGHTS

HISTORY:

  • Throughout most of history women generally have had fewer legal rights and career opportunities than men
  • Women in most nations won the right to vote and increased their educational and job opportunities.
  • Fought for and accomplished a reevaluation of traditional views of their role in society
  • Influential Person:
  • Susan Anthony & Elizabeth Cady: began the National Women's Suffrage Association.(1869)

ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES

  • Gave women equal right to vote, speak, and property such as males
  • Disadvantages:
  • Women engaged in improper behavior that made america a less polite society

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

HISTORY:

  • The legalization of same-sex marriage is characterized as "redefining marriage" by many opponents.
  • As of 2 December 2014, sixteen countries and certain sub-national jurisdictions allow same sex to marry
  • a political, social, human rights and civil rights issue, as well as a religious issue
  • Influential person: Sylvia Rivera(1951-2002) transgender activist, founding member of the Gay Liberation Front

ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES

  • Can bring financial gain to the state and local governments
  • Make it easier to adopt
  • Disadvantages:
  • Marriage has usually been between a man and women
  • Kids need a mom & dad; should be raised in a traditional home

YOUTH IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

  • Started when four youths were arrested for demanding service at a whites-only lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C.
  • Young African-Americans played a big role. Ex: They were participated in sit-ins, voter registration, and bus boycotts
  • Campaigns: Womens learning partnership for rights, development, & peace, and NoH8
  • “When nobody else is moving and the students are moving, they are the leadership for everybody.”
